I don’t use the formal elements of photography for their own sake. I don’t use what’s happening in the world to make statements about photography, I use photography to make statements about what’s happening in the world. I’m a witness and I want my testimony to be eloquent.

I want my pictures to cut through political abstractions... and make a connection on a human level.

I want my work to become part of our visual history, to enter our collective memory and our collective conscience. I hope it will serve to remind us that history's deepest tragedies concern not the great protagonists who set events in motion but the countless ordinary people who are caught up in those events and torn apart by their remorseless fury. I have been a witness, and these pictures are my testimony. The events I have recorded should not be forgotten and must not be repeated.

The worst thing is to feel that as a photographer I am benefiting from someone else's tragedy. This idea haunts me. It's something I have to reckon with every day because I know that if I ever allowed genuine compassion to be overtaken by personal ambition, I will have sold my soul. The only way I can justify my role is to have respect for the other person's predicament. The extent to which I do that is the extent to which I become accepted by the other; and to that extent, I can accept myself.

I spend a lot of time preparing. I think a lot about what I want to do. I have prep books, little notebooks in which I write everything down before a sitting. Otherwise I would forget my ideas.

Some people's photography is an art. Not mine. Art is a dirty word in photography. All this fine art crap is killing it already.

The photographs don't arouse me. All I can think about is the hard work it took to make them.

My job as a portrait photographer is to seduce, amuse and entertain.

what people think to be true or not, even if you are Einstein, has little to do with reality. Our opinion about truth is not the most important - the empirical method is. Truth can only be discussed when it can be tested, otherwise it’s meaningless. So what a silly expectation that it should have anything to do with photography, which is basically not a very ambitious, in this comparison, way of entertaining? Art is not natural, not true. As its name says - art is artificial way of bringing joy, even in Polish - ’sztuka jest sztuczna’. Feeding, defecating and breeding are natural - art is artificial.”

Durgin's photographs are a reflection of his fascination with the body as a sculptural entity and not as a sensationalized object. His complex arrangements of the figure often require extreme contortion to achieve this austere effect, as if the veracity of his figures has been abstracted.Durgin's photos relate a symbiotic relationship between the models and the photographer. His images do not exploit, instead they explore the limits of our physical bodies and our capacity to accept the human form as just that, a form.

The figural gestures within each of Durgin's photographs examine his own physical limitations as well as those of the dancers and performers he works with. The poses in each photo require a tremendous level of skill to reach and maintain. These poses are not only impressive in their ability to seemingly defy physical limitations but they also transform the body into a foreign and amorphic figuration. While the figures are recognizable as bodies they remain detached from common perceptions of the human body.

We look at the world and see what we have learned to believe is there. We have been conditioned to expect.... but, as photographers, we must learn to relax our beliefs.
